Ways To Celebrate Your Baby's First Thanksgiving

This is going to be Itty Bitty's first Thanksgiving - so we want to make it extra special!  So here's some suggestions on how to celebrate with Food, Fashion, and Fun!

Food:


Let's be honest. Thanksgiving is ALL about the food - so why not include your youngest family members.
  • If your baby is eating purees, feel free to puree some green beans, heat up a little bit of that canned pumpkin, and most certainly serve up some pureed turkey!
  • Are you doing Baby-led weaning, and your baby hasn't yet mastered his pincer grasp?  Try serving him some of the following items:
  • Green beans - just cook them however you'd like!
  • Turkey - cut into long strips so he can grab and eat it on his own
  • Sweet Potatoes - yummy! If you're serving them mashed be prepared for a bit of a mess. If you have  some time, make some sweet potato fries and serve them that way. Just steer clear of any glaze or marshmallow topping.
  • Stuffing - super fun for them to get their little hands into!
  • Salad - my little guy loves lettuce and spears of cucumber (but he viscerally hates the seeds!)
  • And if your little one is munching away on most foods - just be sure to fill them up on the healthy items first before they taste some of the sweet deserts! 

Fashion:


Your baby may be too young to enjoy the cornucopia of foods on your dining room table - but you'll still want to deck them out in a perfectly precious outfit.  Why? Well, you can bet your bottom dollar that this time next year - there will be a lot of gross half eaten gobs of stuffing/cranberry sauce/pie/ etc., covering that special holiday outfit you painstakingly picked out so as to impress the in-laws. So, get 'em while they're cute and not as messy.  Trust me.

If your baby IS eating solids, pack an extra pair or two of pants and shirts, and invest in some cute Thanksgiving bibs. My Itty Bitty will be wearing this one from Target.

If you're going out for a walk after your meal, you'll want to bundle your tiny baby up with a hat. My favorite is this one, from Etsy!

You'll also want to cover up those adorable toes - maybe with these booties!

Fun:

Get crafty a day or two before, and make one of these adorable turkeys with your baby's handprints.

Last, but certainly not least, you will want to document your baby's first Thanksgiving.  My suggestion is to take a family photo together.  Gather everyone who came over for dinner, have them sit on a couch or stand together, and set up your camera with a self timer.

If you are just using a smartphone as your camera now-a-days, be sure to download a self timer app, that way you don't have any excuses.  Being the psycho mom I am,  I take A TON of pictures of my adorable Itty Bitty. Problem is, I'm NEVER IN THEM because I'm too busy behind the camera.  So, get the timer and try to make it a family tradition taking a photo of the WHOLE group together.  You may want to do it in between dinner and dessert - that way you aren't sacrificing time cooking the turkey, nobody has left early to get to bed, and you don't risk the embarrassment of the inevitable spill of coffee on your blouse.

How to make pureed green beans for babies

One of my favorite memories from my childhood was going out to our garden and picking fresh green beans off of the stalks and eating them. I loved the crunch, the bright color, and the fresh little slippery beans inside.  Green beans are in season in Rhode Island from June through the beginning of November, but when making baby food I'd choose to puree organic frozen green beans - as fresh ones get a grainy and fuzzy texture when pureed.  However, if your baby likes to feed himself already - give him the real thing - hopefully from a local farm!

Selecting Green Beans

  • I'd get plain frozen organic green beans - you don't have to break any ends! 
  • Don't get canned ones - yuck!

Make Baby Food

  • Steam the green beans for 3-5 mins
  • Drain beans and rinse with cold water
  • Puree the beans in a blender to desired consistency
You can serve green beans alone, or mix it in with sweet potatoes, carrots, potatoes, as well as fruits!

Save Leftovers: You can refrigerate leftovers for up to 3 days, or free your green bean puree for up to three months. Thaw frozen carrot puree overnight in your refrigerator.

If a chef were to reveal their best-kept kitchen secret, they would be sure to tell you that using seasonal produce is the key to successful cooking. Although hothouse production methods and import companies make it more common to enjoy certain fruits and vegetables all year long, choosing produce at the peak of its season is still the best way to enjoy crisp textures and delicious flavors. Here is a guide to the seasonal produce you should be looking for during the fall and winter seasons so your recipes will always reflect the rich bounty of flavors the season has to offer.

Where to Look:

An advantage using seasonal fruits and vegetables is that they are easy to find if you know  where to look. Almost every grocery store, farmer’s market or convenience store will have  seasonal produce available. The challenge comes with knowing what is in-season. Although certain produce are associated with the fall and winter, such as squash and pumpkins, you may be surprised at a few others. For example, limes, which are often a summer staple, become far juicier and tangier starting in October.

When to Buy:

Knowing when to buy seasonal produce is essential for getting the most flavor and nutrients  out of your purchase. For example, apples are available all year; however, they reach their peak crispness during the months between August and November as do pears. Grapefruit also comes into season starting in December and continues to reach peak freshness through March. Squash lovers will also want to make the switch from summer to winter varieties once the cold weather begins to arrive. Additionally, dates, figs and guava are all fall and winter favorites.

Starting Your Child on Solid Food:

Seasonal produce is great to add to your child’s diet when they begin eating solid food because this is when it is most ripe and at best selection. In order to detect any allergies, it is best to feed new eaters one pureed, solid food at a time instead of combining several food options. In order to make it easier on new parents you can use foods that you prefer already.

For instance, next time you cook pumpkin for pumpkin pie, set aside a portion to puree into  baby food. Or next time you are having sweet potatoes or carrots for dinner grab a little extra to puree for your little one. 

Purchasing seasonal produce has many advantages, starting with the fact that they’re more delicious than fruits and vegetables that have been forced to grow out of season. Seasonal produce are also more environmentally-friendly. However, it is important to find out which types of produce are in season beforehand so you can make the most out of your shopping trip. Then, enjoy whipping up a dish using your favorite recipe while knowing that you are getting the most flavor from your seasonal selection of fruits and vegetables. Here’s a quick list of fall and winter seasonal produce to look out for on your next grocery trip.

I adore Farm Fresh RI - especially because of their weekly delivered Veggie Boxes.  Our second Winter Veggie Box was loaded with Thanksgiving goodness!  I pick up my veggie box every week at East Side Mart - which is a public Veggie Box drop off site.  If you have thought about signing up for a veggie box of your own - you'll want to do so quickly!  The Winter box is only for the months of November and December.
I can't wait to make some food for ourselves and Itty Bitty!  My mouth is already watering with ideas.

How to make pureed peas for babies

It just so happens that one of Itty Bitty's favorite things to eat are peas mixed with carrots. They are in season for an extremely short amount of time here in RI - June & July, and October. As fantastic as fresh peas are, don't feel guilty for using frozen peas for your baby food.

Selecting Peas

  • If you are purchasing fresh peas - know that their sweetness dwindles over time. Find out when they were harvested, or ask if you can try a pod first. They are best when eaten just a few hours after being picked.
  • Peas are not one of the dirty dozen - so you don't have to worry as much about buying organic.
  • However, organic and conventionally grown peas are usually comparable in price.
  • Honestly, I just purchase organic frozen sweet peas. I don't have time to fuss with taking peas out of pods!

Storing peas

  • Buy the frozen kind, and keep them in your fridge until you need them. Bada-bing-bada-boom

Make Baby Food

  • If you are using peas in pods, take the peas out and then wash them
  • If you are using frozen peas, they will not need to be washed
  • Steam peas for 3-5 minutes, drain, and save pea water for puree
  • Let hot peas cool a bit, and then puree in a blender. Use pea water to help with consistency.
  • Some older babies will like this to be a bit chunkier - so you can even use a potato masher rather than a blender.
You can serve peas alone, or mix it in with sweet potatoes, carrots, rice, and much more!

Save Leftovers: You can refrigerate leftovers for up to 3 days, or free your pea puree for up to three months. Thaw frozen carrot puree overnight in your refrigerator.

Nuroo Nursing Scarf {review} & Giveaway

Nursing has had it's challenges and so many rewards.  Because Itty Bitty showed up a few weeks ahead of schedule, I was never able to actually take a breastfeeding class. Luckily, the hungry little bugger army crawled/squirmed across my chest the minute after he was born, and found my right breast.  Kid should be a navigator one day, he was dead on!

The days after birth were a blur of activity. Between learning the sounds of a newborn, being poked and prodded like a cow, a severe lack of sleep, and being was shown about 1.2568657 million different ways to hold and nurse my new baby, my head was left spinning.  But, strangely enough, I actually went home feeling like a breastfeeding pro.

Then I found out I had overactive letdown, and a big enough over supply to fill Narragansett Bay. Some may think this is a blessing - but let me tell you - it's not.  In fact, it was really difficult for me.  Thanks to the wonderful support from the RI New Moms Connection & Healthy Babies Happy Moms, I made it through, and now have a great schedule and supply for my seven month old little man.

I now LOVE breastfeeding, and, (much to the chagrin of Tall Dad's fair sensibilities) do it whenever and where-ever Itty Bitty and I are, as long as he is hungry.  He has even gotten used to signing "milk" with his fists (scholarship!), and I am more than happy to reward his communication skills.  

I've nursed in parks, parking lots, restaurants, while reading a book in a store, wedding venues, friend's houses, beaches, and just about anywhere else Itty Bitty and I go.  You name me a place, and I'll bet the mortgage I've nursed there.

I'm extremely comfortable feeding him, with or without extra coverage, but when I do use a cover (feeling a little like The World's Most Interesting Woman) - I now choose to use the Nuroo Nursing Scarf.  (Same company as the Nuroo Pocket - one of my must haves for new moms!)

I've tried a few different types of nursing covers, and found the fabric to be uncomfortably stiff on nearly all of them.  What's worse is that ALL other covers became a wrinkled up mess in my diaper bag!  I'd rather have no cover at all than whipping out my un-ironed crumpled mess, which just looked like a crinkled pillowcase.

Instead, I get to wear my Nuroo Nursing Scarf, which is a scarf AND a nursing cover.  I wear it around my neck as an infinity scarf, and then readjust the buttons to create a nursing cover when I breastfeed Itty Bitty.
The material is so soft and breathable, and doesn't wrinkle up! Plus, I can wear the scarf and cover in multiple ways.  The fantastic founders of Nuroo, who just so happen to be Rhode Island based, have created a helpful video to show you the different styles you can do with your nursing scarf. 
I honestly love this scarf for so many reasons.  It is extremely fashionable, light and comfortable, and is VERSATILE.  
But the best part about this scarf is that my wiggly, nosey, investigative, FOMO (fear-of-missing-out) Itty Bitty has finally met his arch nemesis in the Nuroo scarf.  He normally rips off covers with ease - showcasing my boob to the world (again, offending Tall Dad's fair sensibilities) - at which point he usually removes his mouth and smiles to anyone who has seen his magic trick.  

But, in the ultimate move of skullduggery to thwart Itty Bitty's constant efforts of embarrassing his dad, the Nuroo Nursing Scarf was designed with SNAPS! These snaps allow me to be covered and stay covered.  Sure, my little Hoodini of a child can try to wiggle out, but he has a much harder time uncovering my goods to the rest of the world.  

It's comforting to know while wearing the Nursing Scarf,  I am assuredly covered, and that my tiny baby is less likely to be distracted by the buzzing world that surrounds him as he feeds. Instead, my little David Copperfield has his eye on the prize and doesn't wrestle with fabric.   Not to mention the fact that he is also covered in a lightweight fabric so he doesn't overheat, while I am covered in a beautiful cover without wrinkles.   What more could a nursing mom want?!? Well, maybe if it were washer and dryer safe... Oh wait,  it is. Yeap. Nuroo nailed it here ladies.

How to make pureed carrots for babies

Mmm! Carrot season in Rhode Island runs July through December, and I for one can't get enough of them! Sweet and crunchy and perfect to eat raw, but also a staple for several wintertime comfort foods - carrots are in high demand in our household.

Pureed baby carrots are super easy to make as well, and have been a huge hit with Itty Bitty.

Selecting Carrots

  • One regular sized carrot will equal about 3 ounces of baby food (about 3 ice cubes worth)
  • When choosing carrots, pick ones with a smooth form with a bright orange color
  • Avoid carrots with cracks or wilting greens
  • If you can get carrots with the greens still attached - even better!
  • Medium sized carrots are easier to work with than larger carrots
  • I don't recommend pureeing "baby carrots" which are just big carrots cut into small sticks. They do not taste nearly as good as the real deal

Storing carrots

  • Cut off green tops - they steal the nutrients from the carrot
  • Carrots can be stored for several days

Make Baby Food

  • Rinse carrots in cold water, peel, remove top if you haven't already and cut into small pieces. I usually just cut them into disks a quarter inch thick or so
  • Steam carrots until tender
  • Drain, but save the water for the puree
  • Cool the hot carrots. Trust me, the last thing you need is hot sprayed carrot steam all over your face.
  • Put that squishy carrot goodness into your food processor or blender and blend until it reaches your desired consistancy. Add water to help If your baby is ready to eat with their fingers, you can skip the purreeing part~
You can serve carrots alone, or mix it in with applesauce, peaches, broccoli, peas, brown rice, chicken, beef, you name it!

Save Leftovers: You can refrigerate leftovers for up to 3 days, or free your carrot puree for up to three months. Thaw frozen carrot puree overnight in your refrigerator.

Note: If your child eats tons of carrots (or sweet potatoes) they may turn a tad orange - just like you or I would if we ate a ton of carrots. Don't be alarmed, but take this as a sign to start mixing up their diet a bit.

Teething Must Feel Like Being Bit By A Zombie

If you've been keeping up with my blog, you may have gathered that I'm a pretty big fan of The Walking Dead on AMC.  I probably reference that show more than I really should.  Sadly, when one watches this much zombie television, one is also likely to have creepy dreams associated with flesh eating back form the dead humans.
Yuck.
Well, in one of my dreams, I got bit. It was by this young twenty-something male zombie, wearing a tattered grey and blue plaid shirt. In my dream, I was closing a gate, and he came at me from the side without any warning, and bit my right arm. 

It was terrible... those teeth...ripping through my skin. I tried to cry out, but I couldn't.  Oddly enough, when I woke up, the first thing I thought of was my child. 

Itty Bitty's first tooth is coming in, and it too has been a terrible experience. This past week has been full of sleepless nights, whining, crying, and a downright cranky infant. 

And when I think about those brand new razor sharp teeth, cutting through his young sensitive skin, I can see why he's been so damn miserable.  It's probably like taking an Exacto knife to your gums!  These baby teeth must really hurt! 

At least zombie teeth are old, worn down and a little more dull from eating brains all day!  Although, when I think about it, baby teething, and Walkers have a lot more in common than you could imagine.  Take a look at these sings that your baby might be teething:   

  • Bulging gums
  • Drooling - but my tiny baby has been drooling since he was 3 months old
  • Fussing - more than usual, and is difficult to calm down.  Moans and groans and makes all these weird sounds.
  • Night waking - more than usual, and will be more difficult to put back to sleep or no sleep at all.
  • Biting - everything and anything they can put on those painful gums.  Especially people.
  • Facial Rash - possibly from all of the drooling 
  • Decreased Appetite (refusal of real food)
  • Mild Fever
If you watch The Walking Dead, or have seen any zombie movie of late, you know that zombies suffer from the same symptoms!  Yeah, I just called Itty Bitty a zombie.  I'm a great mom.
                                                                                                                                                 
Well, even though Itty Bitty may be a zombie and desires the taste of flesh more than I could have ever expected, we still should have seen these tell tale signs.  I mean,  Itty Bitty exhibited everyone each of the aforementioned symptoms except for the rash.  It wasn't until we saw a little slit in his bottom gum that we realized what was torturing our poor little babe.  I feel bad because he was so miserable.  But, at least he wasn't eating my brains.  Yet.

Wish us luck, as we enter into this wonderful world of teeth!

I adore Farm Fresh RI - which is a non-profit that helps connect farms with markets and consumers. One of my favorite things that they do is their Veggie Boxes.  Our first Winter Veggie Box was delivered today, and I squealed with delight when I opened the box and saw a bright Purple Cauliflower!  


Here's what was inside and where it was from:

I'll be getting a new fun filled Veggie Box every single week during November and December!  Farm Fresh's Veggie Box Blog always includes a handy dandy cheat-sheet on how and where to store the items. 


Cauliflower
Keep in a plastic bag in the crisper for a few days
Spaghetti Squash and Potatoes
Store in the pantry for a couple of weeks.
Cabbage
Store in the refrigerator for a week.  Eat soon after cutting because the flavor will diminish.
Arugula and Tatsoi
Store in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for a few days.
Celeriac
Remove stems and leaves and keep in a plastic bag in the refrigerator in the crisper for a couple of weeks.

So it looks like I'll need to find a way to use the cauliflower, arugula and tatsoi within the first few days. Luckily, the veggie box also comes with recipe suggestions - because I am clueless on how to cook a celeriac!

How To Feel Fabulous In Just 60 Minutes - and WIN A WAX! {review}

I've had a tough couple of months, physically. I'll spare you the intimate details (or at least I'll save them for a future blog post) but just know that I've felt downright crummy over the recent weeks.

I feel like even though Itty Bitty is only six months old, that these past sleepless nights have aged me about ten years.  I look like I've aged the same in half a year as President Obama has in five.  Plus, my hormones are all out-of-wack, so I've had a few breakouts appear along my chin line. Needless to say, this Tall Mom needed a pick-me-up.  I got just that at a recent trip to Citron Spa on Wayland Ave, in the East Side of Providence.

I was greeted with a friendly hello, a neck warmer, and a delicious mimosa. While enjoying the zen-like waiting room, I was able to chat with a few new friends, munch on petite homemade fruit pastries, and soaked in a few relaxing moments.  Itty Bitty was safe at home with Nana, and I was ready to have a few moments to take care of myself.
I decided to get a facial - the Green Science Facial to be exact :)

For an hour my face was scrubbed, buffed, lathered, rubbed, and sprayed. My hands and legs were massaged while the Aveda skin-renewing masks went to work on my tired face.  If you've never used Aveda products before, they are amazing - all natural and so refreshing!
The soft music, dark lighting and warm room felt like a little piece of heaven.  I remember, as I was lying there having a warm mask rubbed into my skin, I was thinking about . . . nothing.

For the first time in a LONG time: just plain ol' nothing.  Good god was it good!
I didn't think about my to-do list, 
or what I was going to make for dinner.
I didn't think about the loads of laundry I needed to wash, 
or the medicine I needed to pick up at the pharmacy, 
or the thirty emails I needed to respond to.
There was nothing on my mind, and it was delightful.

After the facial was over, I felt like someone had pushed my reset button.  I felt clean, soft and new. As if the estetician had scrubbed away a few sleepless nights.

On my way out of the spa I stopped and peeked into the nail bar, which is beyond adorable.  I made the mental note that I would be asking Tall Dad for another morning off in the near future so I could spend another hour or two at the Citron Spa.

The Rhode Show is currently hosting their 6th annual Rhode Show Search For A Star competition.  I won it back into 2012, and had an extraordinary time cohosting.  It has been fun to check out the videos of this year's hopefuls, and made me a bit nostalgic about my audition process.  

So I thought I'd share with you my first assignment for the contest! Enjoy!


Hi Rhode Show fans, I’m Mary Larsen, one of your 5 contestants for the coveted co-host position on your favorite morning show! The
 judges asked us to fill out a form with 20 questions.  I thought I’d share my answers with you so that you could get to know me better.

2012 The Rhode Show: Search for a Star Top 20 Questions
  1. Star Sign:  Taurushas ability to enjoy the people…is strong and dependable. Taurus leads the way when it comes to reaping the rewards of hard work. Clearly the next STAR!!!
  2. Role Model:  My older sister Jeanne, who has severe mental and physical retardation.  She is nonverbal, and is paralyzed on the left side of her body. Because of her, I know that I need to make the most out of my life, to take every chance that I can take, and to be the best I can be.
  3. Dream Interview:  If I could use time travel, I would have loved to interview Benny Goodman, who was a champion for musicians by not only breaking race boundaries, but also making sure that artists in his ensemble had benefits and proper pay.
  4. Dream Job:  A job where I can share my love for my state, and highlight the positive people and events we have here. Obviously to be the next Co-Host on the Rhode Show!! After that, I’d like to be the current Raffi for our youth, by being a positive role model through music, TV, and online media.
  5. Pets:  I used to have a turtle named Murray, but he went to turtle heaven.
  6. Favorite TV Show: 24, LOST, and America’s Funniest Home Videos which makes my face hurt from laughing so hard!
  7. Favorite Good Causes: Eating and Shopping Locally, Supporting Farmers, Music in our Schools and Prevention of Violence Against Women
  8. Favorite Rhode Island hangout:   Blackstone Boulevard I love taking the walk down that path anytime of the year – especially on Saturdays or Wednesdays when I can make a stop at the Farmer’s Market.
  9. Favorite Rhode Island Restaurant:   Close three-way tie between the Cook and Brown on Hope, and CafĂ© Loungo on Atwells Avenue, and Apsara on Hope street who has the best NIMECHOW!
  10. Favorite Food:  Anything I make from my Hungry Girl cookbooks, especially her Yum Yum Brownie Muffins
  11. Favorite Sports Team:  I have a place in my heart for the PATS, especially since I was a marching band geek for 8 years of my life, but the most exciting sport right now is , Quidditch based upon the Harry Potter books. I am actually going to see the Quidditch World Cup in NYC the weekend of Nov 12th.

  15. Favorite Destination:  Local: Rome Point, Rhode Island, World: Positano, Italy
  16. Favorite Song:  Current: Moves Like Jagger, by Maroon 5 I can whistle it too! Favorite all time: Nimrod by Edward Elgar. If you haven’t heard it – it’s a must!
  17. Favorite Color: Teal
  18. Favorite Movie:  Jurassic Park I almost went to school for paleontology thanks to this film, but changed my mind because I feared that after 8 years of school, all of the bones would have already been discovered!!
  19. Favorite Book:   Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. I’ve only read it 6 times.
  20. If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money? Realistically: I would pay off my parents’ mortgages, allow them to leave their jobs and send them on a much needed all expenses paid vacation.  They took care of me and have been my cheerleaders my entire life, and deserve nothing but the best.  Fantasy: After that, I would rent a GIANT RV filled with DELICIOUS treats and take my friends with me to continue my quest to see the natural wonders in North America!  I’ve already seen Niagara Falls, Glacier National Park, and the Everglades National Park.
  21. Something people would be surprised to know about you.
  • I don’t tan, I freckle.
  • I bet you can’t find where my letter boxes are.
  • I Yelp so LOUD in Providence that I’m on the Elite Squad.
  • Once I was in Down City and I had a Nightmare in the Kitchen.
  • I can play a different instrument in every city in the entire state… oh and in Bali too.
  • The Extraordinary Rendition Marching Band walked me down the aisle while I wore blue chucks!
  • Being the commencement speaker in front a small crowd of 12,000 people for my alma mater, URI. NO BIG DEAL.
  • In my spare time I became the 1st, 2nd, and 4th runner up for Miss Rhode Island.
  • I bring sunshine to the Fantastic Umbrella Factory and sometimes I like to hide in Purgatory Chasm.
  • I believe in Hope.
