Tall Mom tiny baby: 2015

MY FAREWELL FOR 2015

Sunday, December 20, 2015

I was glancing through a "Top 10 Gift Ideas for 2 year olds" blog post the other day, when I asked my son what he wanted for Christmas. I expected him to say something about Thomas the Train, Dragons, or books.

Instead he said he wanted a candy cane on Christmas. For he believes that on Christmas, everyone gets candy canes.

He did not mention presents at all.

It was then that I realized that this may be the last year that my son doesn't have to have a busy holiday season. He just wants candy canes, his friends and family....and I thought that was the smartest thing I heard all season long.

PAJAMA CHRISTMAS PARTY

Wednesday, December 16, 2015

Everyone grows up with different things they love.  My husband always loved baseball and Star Wars.  My brother was a Warcraft nerd.  For whatever reason, my dad has a real passion for Moxie the soda drink.  My mom always loved knitting and being crafty.  But me? Well - I'm a nerd too and, true, I do love Star Wars like Tall Dad - but my one true love is Christmas.

I've watched Elf non stop, White Christmas was always in my DVD player year round and the Barbara Streisand Christmas CD I've had since the mid nineties has been played so much that I have literally worn it out to a point that a player can no longer read the data on the disc.

And while I don't know what my kids will love as they grow older (How To Train Your Dragon is certainly part of my son Rhys' repertoire already though) I can tell you that my love of Christmas has not been lost on them. In fact, Rhys and Felicity seriously LOVE Christmas.  Let me explain...

Star Wars fans will love this simple and delicious Yoda Cookie Recipe. Snickerdoodles dressed up for Yoda fans. easy enough to whip up for a Star Wars movie marathon or to take to the theater to see The Force Awakens. Perfect for a party idea, to serve for your family for a special treat.

Let me tell you about the day I realized that I was a fully grown nerd. It was October 19, 2015. No, there is nothing particularly special about that day. It was just like any other fall evening in my beautiful city of Providence, RI - it was a Monday night full of football, getting ready for a Halloween party that was coming up, and I was pounding so much candy corn that I couldn't tell where my teeth ended and the cavities began.

It just also happened to be the night tickets for Star Wars™ The Force Awakens went on sale.

And this, my friends, is where the journey to full grown nerddom begins...

I am a Christmas Elf.  Seriously - if there was a "Christmas lover" ranking, it would be Santa, Buddy The Elf, and then me.  But here's the issue, I am terrible at buying gifts for people.  Especially Tall Dad.  What the heck do you get the man that has everything?  Jeez, what do you get any man?  Well, I've honestly given it some serious thought and I have a couple of ideas...

My favorite holiday music stations have been playing on Pandora for several weeks now. Our Christmas tree is decorated, stockings hung by the fireside, and this weekend begins our season of holiday parties and get togethers.

Tall Dad and I adore these times, filled with family and friends, as well as some of the best eating and drinking all year. Savory, sweet, and spices fill all of my senses!

Baby's First Thanksgiving

Friday, December 4, 2015

Thanksgiving has always been a special holiday in the Tall Family.  It's Tall Dad's favorite holiday (it's only competition is Trade Deadline Day for Major League Baseball - and, yes, he considers that a holiday) and while I always consider myself a true Christmas Elf, I really enjoy the idea of family getting together just for the simple reason of sharing a meal together.  But this year was extra special because not only did we host at our new house and fry a turkey, but also because it was the first Thanksgiving I got to spend with my little lass...

Fun fact: I have not had a normal night's sleep in 3 years.  Yup, your read that right - 3 FREAKIN' years.  Between Tall Mom's first pregnancy, then a colicky first baby, then the second pregnancy, and now an adorable 5 month old that sleeps randomly and in my bed no less, my sleeping arrangements with my wife have been dubious at best.

But, this got me thinking - I miss my wife.

Like, a lot.

It's never just us anymore.  But, I had one conversation with her the other night on a date night that made me realize there's a light coming.  I'm ready to have my wife back - and here are the reasons why...

Potty Training Tips Tricks and Advice

Monday, November 16, 2015

Potty training is hard.  Well, not for everyone I suppose.  You could have a prodigy who goes from diaper to porcelain throne within two days.  (By the way, I am very jealous of whoever that is.) But for us common folk - it's the source of a lot of stress.  In fact, I'd say I'm getting just as frustrated with potty training as I did with sleep training and that's saying A LOT.  Not only do I read one thing on how to start the process, then I get told by someone else something completely different  and then I see a video about how one person did the exact opposite of the past two things I tried.  ::deep breaths::

Listen, there isn't just one way to skin a cat, and there's definitely more than 40 billion ways to potty train a kid.  For what it's worth - I've tried to jot some ideas down that I think work for me and I hope they work for you too....

I have belonged to moms groups since I was pregnant with my son three years ago, and one of the chief complaints from fellow moms is that we can't find time to take care of ourselves.

Sure, we would love to find the time to do our normally scheduled activities, like getting our hair done, going out with friends to see a movie, or having a weekly date night with our spouse.

But I'm not even talking about those things...

My Maternity Photo Session: Pregnancy Pictures with Agroterra Photography

Monday, November 9, 2015

A Zebra. A big, huge, horizontally striped zebra. That's exactly what I felt like recently at a friends wedding. I was seven months pregnant, had gained some weight, and stupidly fell into the trap of wearing horizontal stripes while being pregnant.

(Why?!?! Why make us pregnant women look larger than we already are?)

I hid from the photographer and videographer as much as I could, but found one photo of me from behind, and I was mortified. I wanted to nuke that photo right off the page.

At 36 weeks pregnant, I felt big, bloated, sick and uncomfortable this entire second pregnancy. I didn't feel beautiful, that is , until I had a maternity photo session done by Lisa Gendron of Agroterra Photography.

As Christmas Shopping Begins, Take a Moment To Watch This Video

Tuesday, November 3, 2015

Halloween is over, which means every store has already stripped it's shelves from the orange and black decorations, and have switched them for red and gold. People's AMAZON shopping carts are filling up with gift ideas, and many are beginning to worry about how to pay for all of the gifts.

I started to think about the gifts I needed to buy, and came across this video.

The Best Baby and Toddler Friendly Places in Rhode Island - Morris Ave Tot Lot - Providence

Snuggled within Morris Avenue on the East Side of Providence is a precious and perfect little playground specifically aimed at babies and toddlers.

The toddler park on Morris Ave seems to have been an extra house lot the city may have taken over and filled with mulch and fenced in. It is not large, but I actually like that about it. Unlike its larger playground neighbor, the Glady's Potter Garden, the Morris Ave tot lot is cute and compact - and you can see you little one playing at all times.

This park is so tiny, in fact, that many people drive by it not even knowing it exists. I personally lived and hung out on the East Side of Providence for 9 years before I knew this little playground was there.

Halloween 2015: I Laughed and Danced The Night Away

Sunday, November 1, 2015

Last night was epic as it was amazing. It was our first Halloween as a family of four!

We were a family full of Star Wars characters. Tall Dad was the dashing Han Solo, our kids were Chewbacca and Yoda, and I was Princess Leia from A New Hope. I love dressing up - for any reason - and am so excited that my oldest child is now old enough to go trick-or-treating...so that my family can have a reason to all get dressed up!

I love my family.  Really, I do.  We may not always get along and we certainly argue about the stupidest stuff for no reason. But, in the end, we are still family and I have their backs no matter what.  But, one thing I have come to appreciate over my thirty two years on this planet is the advent of my "chosen" family.  These are the people I choose to surround myself with on a daily basis, and trust with every fiber in my being.  And while the holidays come around I know it's important to spend time with your bloodlines - but it's easy to forget those people you choose to be in your life.  Especially when you have kids.  Here is my ode to them...

I envy people who can sleep soundly. Nay, I envy people who can sleep in general.  Better yet - no, I really dislike them them.

I feel this way because Tall Dad and I haven't had a normal night of sleep in nearly three years.

Yup.  Three long years. Why, you ask?

BECAUSE WE HAVE KIDS. That's why.

Between my two pregnancies, my son Rhys who refuses to sleep at all cost, and a newborn baby of only five precious months old, I can safely say that House Larsen has been struggling mightily in the zzz's department. But, given the hot commodity that sleep has become, I have learned some tips over the years that help lessen the sleep strangle in my house.  Here are my top 6 favorite tricks of the trade....

Best Hikes with Infants and Strollers {guest post}

Sunday, October 25, 2015

Fall is one of my four favorite seasons to go hiking. Seriously! I love hiking all year round with my children in tow. It’s an easy, usually free, way for my family to have fun while enhancing our health and well-being.

It wasn’t always easy though. After I became a mother, finding the time and motivation to hit the trails was difficult. Plus, I never hiked with little ones. But I did recognize how much better my children behave, ate, and–mercy!–slept if we ran around, climbed some trees, and splashed in a few puddles. So I started checking out parks and preserves all over the state and started a long list of my favorite kid-friendly hikes

Being pregnant can really suck.  But, it can be really beautiful too.  I've never felt more beautiful in my life than when I took my maternity photos. On the same level, having kids can really suck too. But then there are the days that I feel so full of life and love because of them that I cannot contain myself.  In fact, I often find myself crying a lot because of how fulfilled I've become in my life. (Which, by the way, if I told my twenty year old self that I feel this way now, the twenty year old me would probably kick my butt.)  But, nothing, and I mean NOTHING, gets me more emotional than one thing in my house.  That one thing is this picture...

I've always loved Halloween. I've dressed up, every year, since I was three.  Whether it was being Big Bird, April O'Neil from Ninja Turtles, or the Evil Queen from Snow White - I've always been down to dress up.  Heck, one of my favorite movie's is the oh-so-bad-but-I-don't-care-because-it's-awesomely-bad Hocus Pocus!  Bette Midler in that movie is my spirit animal.

Yup, you know you love it too.  Admit it.

But. this year will be different.  A whole new level of excitement is upon us.

Our Trip to King Richard's Faire

Friday, October 16, 2015

When you have two young kids, going out is really tough, man. (Wait, who am I kidding - going out ANY amount of kids is tough.)  There's a lot of planning involved, a lot of tension, worrying about who will take care of what, and what the kid(s) will be doing as well as getting into. In the end, it's really tiring.  To be honest, going to the park is enough for me.  I don't need a huge day out with all different kinds of activities and worrying about  a schedule like I how I used to be.  I suppose, all I want is to just go somewhere and have an experience - to let the event or the place I'm at just wash over me and guide ME where I should go.  Tall Dad and I recently took our family out and I got this exact experience - and it was to King Richard's Faire.  And my god, was it awesome.  Let me explain...

I really like to dress up.  A lot.  Well, for special occasions.  (Otherwise I'm a favorite t-shirt and pajama bottoms kinda girl.) But, going on vacation, gala's, or the random date night definitely requires a nice touch.

But, here's the issue - I've got kids.

So, it's pretty much always a favorite t-shirt and pajama bottoms kind of night.  Which is ok.  I've accepted that.

No, I may not be able to dress up like I used to, but I can still have some style occasionally with makeup and small things. This in mind, I still like to experiment everyone once in a while with things while my kids nap.  My latest conquest - everyone's favorite little blue and white droid.

I love being a mom, but man, oh man, am I having a hard time juggling my new weight and new body.

I know it took me nine months (let's be real, 10 months this last time) to brew a baby girl, and I shouldn't expect to be back in tip top shape by four months out, but I would be lying if I said I was happy with my body right now.

I'm trying to be forgiving and kind to myself.

But last week I had a come-to-Jesus moment.

Fall Activities in Rhode Island That You Can Do With a Toddler

Thursday, September 24, 2015

I've heard it said time and time again, that Fall is the best season to be in Rhode Island. Most would think that Summer would reign supreme in the Ocean State, but if you want to really spend some time in the outdoors, and you don't like the sweltering heat, then autumn is truly the time to be in Little Rhody.

I've compiled some of my favorite activities to do in Rhode Island - especially if you have kids, babies, or a toddler. But mind you, I enjoyed all of these fun things before I even had children - so really the list is universal!

How to Soothe A Baby With Colic - 10 Steps to Helping A Colicky Baby

Wednesday, September 23, 2015

This blog post about soothing a crying baby with colic has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions and advice are mine alone. #MyLittleRemedies #CollectiveBias
I have two adorable lovely children. They are my sun and moon. (Thank you Daenerys Targaryen) There is nothing better in this world than knowing that they are happy and healthy.

But as great as they can be, there is nothing worse than hearing them cry, and knowing that there is very little that I can do to stop it.  In fact, it's terrible.  Nope, it's torture.  I wouldn't be surprised if they had the sounds of babies crying playing on a constant loop at Guantanamo during it's heyday - that's how awful it is.

Here's the rub though - when your kid has colic, there really is NOTHING you can do to fix it.  Your kid will cry, and cry, and cry, and CRY for hours on end.  You will be sleepless.  You will be tired. You might even fall into depression.  Your only option is to just wait and let it sort itself out. Only time fixes colic. But there are things you can do to help ease the crying, and at least soothe your colicky baby.  My new go-to solution is to use the brand new Little Remedies® Colic Relief and Gas Relief drops from Target.  But more on that in a bit....

It's actually the company's 150th birthday this year, and to celebrate, Carter's is hosting a 150th Birthday Sweepstakes where 150 winners will be selected to win two $150 Carter's Gift Cards.

Celebrating Baby Days

Tuesday, September 8, 2015

If you have children or babies, you know that getting a moment by yourself without any interruption is a rare and beautiful thing! Thankfully, Acorn recently sent me a gift card so I could accomplish some necessary shopping during Sam's Club Baby Days!  While there, I was able to bask in the air conditioning, and shop to my heart's content while Tall Dad watched the kiddos.

This Labor Day weekend was perfect. We were able to see friends who lived far away, went to a polo match and the beach, ate lobster, and even had a fire in our fire pit. It was fast paced, full of feedings, naps, and diaper changes, but it was a whole lot of fun.

After our company left, Tall Dad and I began to clean up the house a bit, and we put our children down for a nap. I knew it was time for me to tackle some of my shopping to-do list, and I asked my husband if I could have a couple of hours to myself.

Because shopping without children in tow is like taking a mini vacation.

Kids Clothing is the Cutest

Monday, September 7, 2015

I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Influence Central for Carter’s.
I received a complimentary gift card to facilitate my review and thank me for my participation.
As a teacher, I always loved the back to school season, especially because of the deals! Notebooks, pens, pencils and even storage containers are lower than they will ever be for the rest of the school year. I was never able to fully appreciate the sales on children's clothing...that is..until two years ago when I had my first tiny baby!

Now, with two kids in tow, I can fully drool over pages of kids clothing catalogs or websites. Adorable outfits jump from the pictures as I imagine them on my own son and daughter.

This year I've decided to be a part of the back to school action at Carter's

Won't You Be My Neighbor

Right now, at this very moment, I am lonely.

My husband is out with some guy friends, and my two kids are asleep. One in the room next-door, and the other in my arms as a rock in my rocking chair.

The crickets outside my window are chirping away a beautiful symphony, accompanied by the white noise machine in my sons bedroom.

My cats are tumbling around downstairs, their bellies full of delicious meal of canned fancy feast.

I am happy. My heart is full.

But right now I am lonely.

It Only Gets Better As They Get Older

Friday, September 4, 2015

While shopping for Adirondack chairs the other day, I was randomly stopped by an older woman. She looked like she was my mom's age, somewhere in her mid sixties, with brightly shining silver hair, and wise eyes. She smiled a huge smile at me that made her eyes crinkle into tiny lines. She pointed at me, referring to the fact that I was wearing a newborn baby, and said "it only gets better as they get older. Just wait!"

"I know," I replied. "I have a two year old at home, and he's one of my best friends."

Side note: is it more of an indictment on me or my social life that my son is my best friend?  Food for thought...

Anyhow, whatever my social status may be, I will admit that while having a baby is delightful and beautiful for all it's own reasons, having a toddler is just downright cool...

Little Tikes Cape Cottage Playhouse Review : Toddler Toys

Thursday, August 27, 2015

One of the coolest things about having a two year old toddler is the imaginative play that starts to take place. Some days he pretends he is a dragon, other days he and his friends make up their own world. But recently, one of his favorite toys to play in has been his new Cape Cottage Playhouse by Little Tikes. My two year old loves this outdoor toy so much that I couldn't wait to review it and spread the love!

Top 5 Nurturing Tips for New Dads {guest post}

Wednesday, August 26, 2015

Mothers nurture their babies for nine months in their womb, care for them when they are born and are understandably more attached to the newborn than fathers are. When we brought home our first child, I remember my husband shying away from the nursery. So one evening, after he came home from work, I put our boy in his arms and snuck away to the kitchen to prepare dinner. When I came back to check on my boys, I found them staring into each other’s faces while my husband was telling our son about his day at work. It was just the jitters that he needed to get out. Fathers are not just the second adult in the house; they can influence their children’s lives immensely. So, here are some tips on how to become a supportive new dad:

Toddler Dragon Adventures in Surprize by Stride Rite

Tuesday, August 25, 2015

This post brought to you by Stride Rite. The content and opinions expressed below are that of Tall Mom tiny baby .
Some great advice I once heard was to buy comfortable shoes and a fantastic bed mattress - because you spend all of your day in either one or the other. I've totally taken this to heart, not just for myself, but also for my family.
My son currently thinks he is a dragon....90% of the day.
He likes to pretend to fly, run incredibly fast across our yard, and when he eats - he says he is doing "Dragon Bites!"

Our rough and tumble toddler lives life to the fullest, and with all of his daily dragon adventures, his shoes really can take a beating
We've had our fair share of shoes in our household (especially since kids' feet grow at an exceedingly fast rate) and we've learned our lesson to trust brand names that have have made it through the test of time.

My most recent shoe purchase that I'd like to recommend is the shoe brand Stride Rite (who have been in business since 1919) and their new line called Surprize which is only available at Target and Target.com.
These shoes are awesome in my opinion because of three key points:
  • Comfort – These shoes have a generous fit and all memory foam footbeds, ensuring great comfort for your kids
  • Fit – The shoes have very flexible outsoles allowing for an agile, natural step and growth
  • Durability – The rubber toes ensure durability
They have Surprize for girls and Surprize for boysWe chose the toddler boy's Darion Sneakers, which I picked up at my local Target store, and they have certainly been up for son's dragon adventures!!
What types of qualities do you look in for shoes for you or your family?
Talk soon friends - I'm off to have some more Dragon Adventures!

Time sure does pass quickly when you have a baby. One minute they are a newborn, and the next they are a two year old toddler, running around a playground and laughing with friends.

What seems like a long long time ago, in a galaxy far away, we dealt with a terrible foe.

My baby was teething.
